Training Opportunities for Young Leaders

As a progressive dairy processing co-operative serving Ontario dairy producers for over 60 years, Gay Lea Foods recognizes the importance of supporting the development and training of its members and member families. We believe providing development and training opportunities to our membership strengthens the co-operative and develops members who are willing and able to lead Gay Lea Foods in the future.

Gay Lea Foods has supported a number of development and training initiatives including:

  • Gay Lea Foods’ Leadership in Governance Training Modules (24 Foundation modules and 6 Advanced Program modules, focused on Gay Lea Foods delegates & Directors)
  • International Study Tours for Gay Lea Foods Directors
  • 4-H Ontario Programs
  • The Co-operative Young Leaders Program (CYL) (for youth aged 13-18), coordinated by the Ontario Co-operative Association and held at our Co-operative Education Centre in Aylmer
  • The Rural Ontario Institute’s Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program
  • Ontario’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program

Building on this foundation, Gay Lea Foods has two additional training initiatives planned for 2022 and details are outlined below.

Co-operative Leadership Program (CLP) – Spring 2022 – Fall 2023

Since 2010 Gay Lea Foods has completed 4 different classes of the CLP which is focused on producer members (or family members actively involved in the dairy farm). From the spring of 2022 until the fall of 2023, up to 15 participants aged 20 - 37 will experience a number of learning opportunities through 5 sessions. One of the sessions will include training with participants from the PEI-based dairy co-operative, Amalgamated Dairies Limited (ADL). Young Producers’ Forum – July 2022 and January 2023

The Young Producers’ Forum is an opportunity for you and your partner to step away from your busy life on the farm and participate in sessions with fellow producer members of Gay Lea Foods Co-operative, designed to build your leadership and communications skills. Two sessions are planned for January 25-26, 2022 (in conjunction with our AGM) and July 13-14, 2022 and will be comprised of a maximum of 15 producer members with their partner and children.
